The Inspirational 6D
On the 4th of December 2012, the grade 6D’s in supervision of Frau Quentin raised more than R1000 in funds for a charity project named New Dawn. The project was created in aid of underprivileged children situated in the Cape Flats. It is based in Athlone, in an area called Kewtown. New Dawn is a feeding scheme and aftercare for children who have grown up in not the best living conditions. Everyone is welcome.  The feeding scheme includes a single meal every day, though depending on behaviour and school attendance, rewards are offered. In order to motivate the children to be their absolute best, the workers and volunteers encourage them to go to school, do their homework, and not get into trouble. Every year 3 students, who have achieved every goal, are surprised with well a surprise. This year the surprise was a camp. The 6D helped raise money for the children as there were insufficient funds. Well done 6D!

Grade 7a turned cakes into "bricks" for the new building
24.10.2012
Janika Schwalm initiated an idea to collect money to buy a “brick” as Grade 7a’s contribution to the completion of our school’s new building. The entire class jumped at the idea and with admirable enthusiasm and energy, organised a cake sale which was held during the two short breaks on 17 and 18 October  at the Bolzplatz and in the main corridor. Although the timing  was close to the bazaar, parents assisted and encouraged. Owing to the splendid support of the school community the yummy cakes soon disappeared and a very satisfactory amount of funds was raised. At least two “bricks” can now be contributed, more than was originally envisaged.  7a would like to thank the school community and parents heartily for making this possible. Quite apart from raising the funds, this was a very good exercise in community cooperation and in raising community spirit.

Neues Gebäude für neue Schüler

Maintaining their reputation as a learning institution of excellence offering an international education, the German International School Cape Town is currently undergoing an upgrade to their facilities and opening their doors to more non-German speaking learners who could benefit from the school’s world class academic offerings.

The upgrade, partly funded by the German Government encompasses the construction of a striking architectural four storey masterpiece building consisting of a state-of-the-art two-level library, eight new classrooms and a multi-function room. “We consistently strive to offer the best international education and with our new building we can accommodate more learners in the non-German speaking stream. We welcome all interested learners from the broader Cape Town community,” says Hermann Battenberg, Principal of the school.

At present the school teaches 720 pupils from varying backgrounds and with the new building this is predicted to increase to 750 in 2013. The school currently offers four streams – two German speaking streams and two English speaking streams aimed at children whose mother tongue is not German.

The multimedia library will include ample computers and ipads, all with internet connectivity which learners can access for educational purposes. Additionally, each of the eight new classrooms will be equipped with interactive whiteboards and a computer with internet access while the multi-function room will be used for amongst others, events, exams and staff training which is a priority for the school.

Considerable investment was also ploughed into the schools’ existing canteen and aftercare facility. This is of particular importance for the peace of mind of working parents knowing that while not in their care, their children receive daily balanced meals and are in a safe, education enriching environment.

“The German International School Cape Town has over the years built up a reputation of excellence, offering a world class international education to both German speaking and non-German speaking learners. The German Government has invested into the school for a major upgrade that will allow them to welcome more learners from the Cape Town community,” says Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Roland Herrmann. The official inauguration of the new building will take place on completion of the construction by 23 November 2012.

The school prides itself on academic excellence and also aims to enrich the learners through various activities in the fields of music, culture, sciences and sports. The German International School Cape Town offers all learners from South Africa a unique opportunity to qualify with both the South African Secondary Certificate and German Abitur which allows entry into any South African, German or other European University.

Each year the German International School Cape Town invites non-German-speaking learners from Grade 5 to apply for a place at the school and to take the entrance examination. These learners do not need any German background as they will study German intensively to prepare for the integrated high school where they will be exposed to German culture and taught bilingually according to South African and German curricula.

K.I.D.S. inauguration of their new President

Dear All
The inauguration of the new K.I.D.S. President took place tonight at the Royal Cape Yacht Club and a very warm event it was! Well attended with some 15+ parent-aged participants, some ex Interactors, the German School’s Deputy Principal Mr Christoph Abt and his wife (fairly new in Cape Town but already supportive and making an uplifting speech) and of course the DSK liaison teacher Brigitte McKee. The ‘oldest’ Interactor, who joined in 1991 when K.I.D.S. was started under the auspices and guidance of our club member Niel Rossouw, was also there, namely Brigitte’s son Donny. The Interactors themselves took the cake when it came to speech making: short in length, but truly spoken from the heart and each one of them spoke about the joy they got out of uplifting fellow youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds or mixing with youngsters form societies with whom they generally have little contact. The recent ‘One-to-One’ project when they as members each partnered a physically or mentally disabled youth at the Good Hope Centre annual party (in which we as club also participate), was highlighted as a memorable event and Brigitte in her talk mentioned the wonderfully smelly fingers, clothes and hair the able youngsters managed to take back home after their stint at preparing calamari together with us at the annual Community Chest party in March. Many of the short presentations mentioned the fun they had because of being members of Interact and all thanked Frau McKee.

As representative of the Cape Town Rotary Club I expressed an encouraging message on behalf of Pres John Gomes who could not attend, thanking them for their truly sterling input and for Brigitte’s wonderful contribution now 23 years running! The challenge for the DSK and for the CTRC is to ensure that a suitable new liaison teacher is found, as Brigitte will retire at the end of 2013. That will indeed be a sad loss. I also suggested, if not implored, that the departing Interactors join the new yet-to-be-formed Rotoract Club at UCT, which Oscar Ssuna is currently planting and watering the seeds of!

For the projects which these youngsters are undertaking see the attached list and for your information, herewith the new Interact Committee:
President Ally Winkler
Vice President Katja Diedericks
Treasurer Julien Oldenburg (who promised to take great care of the finances!)
Secretary Anne Hahne
All who spoke, spoke extremely well and convincingly and expressed the ethos of Rotary marvelously. The K.I.D.S. club is in good hands.
Regards

Mein Recht, Dein Recht?!
