Motto of the Primary School
At our school students learn with their heads, their hearts and their hands at a place, which is fun, characterized by mutual respect, with which everyone can identify and at which everyone feels well and secure.
Our teaching methods include cooperative learning, open forms of instruction, activity and discovery-oriented learning, by means of which elementary knowledge is learnt in a playful manner with the aim of learning independent learning.
Please note: medium of instruction from Grade 1 to 4 is German! English is taught intensively as a subject.
Infomation for the Primary School
At our present three-branched primary school with about 222 pupils, (34 at the satellite school in Tygerberg/Parow), are taught from Grades 1-4. Owing to their traditional connection and close proximity, the pre-primary schools of the evangelical-Lutheran congregations of the Cape from Gardens, Wynberg and Bellville may be regarded as pre-schools of the DSK, even though they are organisationally independent. Pupils are also able to attend Grades 1-4 at our satellite school in Tygerberg/Parow, one of Cape Town's northern suburbs.
Our long-term goals are to prepare your children for dual language use and to obtain the NSC (Matric) or the Abitur of the combi-branch (NSC and German international Abitur simultaneously). Therefore it is important to already lay the basis for successful learning in the primary school.
This happens through:
- child-friendly teaching in German
- English from Grade 2
- individual support and assistance of all students
- a child-friendly playground with many play and tumbling areas to encourage the child's need to move
- many extra-curricular activities, e.g. choir, orchestra, swimming etc.
- a large number of after-school activities on offer
- homework supervision
Parents still have the duty to discipline their children and impress on them the adherence to the school rules as well as those of the aftercare and to abide by these.
