What kind of qualification is it?
DSD II is an additional qualification to the final South African exam which is only offered by the German schools in Southern Africa. It is a certificate to prove proficiency in German for potential studies at a German university.

Who sits for the exam?
DSD II must be obtained by every DaF (German as Foreign Language) learner and every DaM (German as Mother-Tongue) learner in the NSC-stream of Grade 11. It is an additional qualification to the final South African exam which is only offered by the German schools in Southern Africa.

When does it take place?
It takes place in August of every year.

What is the procedure of the exam?
It comprises three written examinations and a 20-minute oral exam.

The written examination takes place only on one day:

• Listening skills – 50 min
• Reading skills – 85 min
• Writing skills – 120 min

The oral exam is split into two parts:

• First section: a presentation for about 5 min on a given topic (20 min preparation time) and followed by a 5 min discussion time
• Second section: a PowerPoint presentation for about 5 min on a previously prepared topic and followed by a 5 min discussion time

What language level does it examine?
DSD II is equal to Level B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
