English Stream
In Grade 5 English-speaking children, with no prior knowledge of the German language, have the opportunity to join the DSK.
Teaching, learning and tests for these learners will be largely done in English. Extensive Daf (German as a Foreign Language) classes are integrated into their timetables.
The English stream learners graduate with the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) of the Independent Examination Board (IEB) and a German language diploma (DSD II). The NSC qualifies them to study at South African universities while the DSD II gives our learners the opportunity to study at numerous universities and higher education institutions in Germany, opening doors to an international career.
The IEB offers a superior National Senior Certificate (NSC), which is recognized in Europe and America for its training in critical thinking and skills in transference. This intensive preparation ensures our learners’ competence and confidence in coping with the demands of tertiary education. The curriculum and assessment methods of the IEB differ from those of the Department of Education; Umalusi, however, validates both examining bodies, through the issue of a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
The high academic standard of the DSK has been recognized for many years, and as an IEB school, we look to the impressive level of tertiary success among our past learners as our continuing benchmark of competitive relevance in the education scene of the Western Cape. In order to enable tertiary admission specifically in Germany (and countries of the European Union), it is obligatory for the IEB-NSC stream learners to sit for the DSD II in Grade 11, a diploma that validates linguistic competence in German.
Examinations are written in accordance with the IEB requirements. The IEB final examinations in Grade 12 are nationwide and are weighted to comprise usually between 50% and 75% of the final mark, the remainder consisting of continuous assessment through the final school year.
