Grades 1 – 4: In a total of 4 classes. 3 classes are at DSK Cape Town; 1 at our DSK satellite school in Tygerberg.
Grades 5 – 9: In a total of 4 classes. 2-3 for German stream, 1-2 for English stream.
Grades 10 – 12: In total 4 classes: 2 for German stream (Abitur / NSC), 2 for English stream (NSC).
The class size average is between 15 and 27 learners per class, it varies on the number of applicants we are capable of taking in.

We currently employ 83 teachers at the DSK.
12 German teachers are employed. They are seconded (paid for) by the German government.
71 local teachers are employed by the School Association.
Our teachers are a diverse group, coming from different backgrounds. Our teaching staff are native speakers of German and / or English, some of whom have emigrated here from Germany / Austria.
- Our fees are more competitive due to the subsidy from the German government. This allows for an excellent education at a lower rate.
- High academic standard and achievements
We have two graduation options:
– The IEB-NSC (Matric) with German language diploma DSD II and a combined graduation NSC and German International Abitur. With the German International Abitur learners have the possibility to study in South Africa, Germany, Europe and many other countries (in total over 100 countries worldwide)
– The NSC is the entrance qualification for South African universities, in combination with the DSD II study options at numerous tertiary institutions in Germany are possible - A broad range of extra murals, many of which are free of charge
- Intensive German is taught from Grade 5 in the English stream

- In addition to the prescribed curriculum for SA schools, the DSK offers German at a home language level and a foreign language level.
- In Grade 12 the German language diploma DSD II exam is taken by all NSC learners. This is a proficiency certificate, which, in combination with the NSC, provides the eligibility to study in Germany (certain conditions apply).
- From Grades 10 – 12, German-speaking learners and those who are fluent in German attend the German stream to qualify for the German International Abitur (A-levels). Most of the German-stream subjects are taught in German in accordance with the German curriculum (except for English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Music Appreciation and Art Appreciation).
- English-speaking learners or those whose level of English is better than German will follow the English stream to graduate with the IEB-NSC.
- Compulsory subjects: German (home language / second additional language), English (home language), Afrikaans / IsiXhosa (second additional language), Mathematics / Math Lit and Life Orientation.
- Elective subjects: The English stream has a broad range of subjects of which at least 2 subjects need to be chosen.
- Additionally, they will be prepared for the German language diploma II in Grade 12.
The school offers a Grade 10 and 11 NBT (National Benchmark Test) preparation course. - Remedial courses in languages and mathematics are provided at no extra cost after school hours at school.

Yes, we currently have Eco Rangers, KIDS and children with a heart.
Sports Day, all classes participate in this during a chosen school day of the year.
Every two years a Sports Olympiad and Orchestra Festival with the other German schools in Southern Africa take place.
We also have an annual chess tournament, various music events, concerts and drama performances.
The School Day
Most subjects are taught in double lessons to enable continuity and greater quality-effectiveness in learning and teaching.
We hire a privately owned bus company service for our school community.
We currently have buses that run to Table View, Tygervalley, Tokai, Hout Bay, Langa, Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.
Monday to Thursday: 7:55 am – 2:25 pm
Friday: 7:55 am to 1:15 pm
On average we have assemblies once a month, taking place usually in the sports hall or the amphitheatre.
Social Aspects
Bilingualism and integration are strongly encouraged in the English and German stream. All Grade 5 learners from both language streams participate in a weekly encounter lesson and in sports education together, this allows them to get to know each other. English and the second foreign language are also taught in mixed classes from Grade 6 onwards.
Balanced meals are available daily with an emphasis on healthy eating.
- The school has a health and safety committee that meets regularly.
- 24-hour security is provided, monitoring visitors, construction and vehicle access.
- The DSK is fully compliant with the government’s safety regulations.
- The use of Uber is restricted on and around the school premises, learners may only make use of these taxi-type services when accompanied by an adult (+18).

The English stream
This stream allows learners to qualify with the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) at the end of Grade 12 in the following subjects (some are elective / choice subjects): English, German, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, Mathematics, Physical Science , Life Science, History, Geography, Accounting, Visual Art and Life Orientation.
The German stream
This stream offers a joint South African-German curriculum:
English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, in accordance with the IEB (South African) curriculum (Compulsory subjects).
German, Mathematics, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Sport, in accordance with the German curriculum (Some are elective / choice subjects).
