After 25 months of planning and building, we are super excited to say that we finally can make use of our new state-of-the-art sports hall; one of the most modern and well-equipped halls of the Western Cape, if not countrywide! There was lots of anticipation in the build-up to the opening Friday, 23 August as many learners, teachers and parents saw the new facility for the first time. For the opening ceremony, we welcomed representatives of the German Parliament and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Dagmar Freitag, Ms Ulla Schmidt, Dr Andreas Görgen, the German Consul General, Mr Matthias Hansen and the Minister of Education of the WC, Ms Debbie Schäfer, as well as invited guests. Our former learner Sivuyile Genu lead the festive programme which consisted of a colourful Grade 4 welcome performance, a Grade 12 dance, a musical performance of Grade 5’s and 6’s, a pyramid show from the whole Grade 10 group, a short first-team basketball match against invited DSK alumni’s, video screenings, official speeches and the handover of the key marking the official opening of the hall.
Here are a few key features of the hall: A gallery with space for more than 150 spectators overlooking a 23 x 44 m court with a clear height of nine meters; two automated curtain walls that divide the main court into three sections, allowing three classes to happen simultaneously; acoustic panels ensuring that the noise levels meet DIN requirements for acoustics in school sports halls; three basketball, three volleyball and six badminton practise courts while the main centre court offers a handball, basketball, tennis and volleyball court of international size; two wall-mounted LED screens to serve as scoreboards or for digital supported learning; the building is wheelchair friendly, offering toilet and shower facilities on the ground level and four changing rooms built on two separate floors as well as a catering area with a serving kitchen on gallery level overlooking the court.
We wish all of you loads of fun and many happy memories with the new hall!!
