Teacher development programme
“Teacher shortage has become a chronic condition,” according to many experts and teachers’ unions such as Sadtu (Times live, 10/02/2017 by Bongani Mthethwa) and education experts evaluate education in South Africa as “A system in crisis.” (City press, 31/5/2016 by Sipho Masondo).
Do we feel the 'teacher shortage' at the DSK ?
We are still attracting highly qualified and experienced local teachers and we maintain our teaching standards by offering regular teacher training programmes. Additionally, we pride ourselves to having teachers seconded from Germany. They bring with them international education standards and innovative ideas. We are also supported by the foreign office of Germany and are offered regular annual training opportunities.
Why do we have a teacher training program ?
As a school, we take pride in giving back to the South African community and take our social responsibility seriously. Our teacher development programme implemented in 2017 is evidence of our endeavours in this regard. We believe that only through education we can build a better South Africa for all.
What do we offer ?
We invite South African student teachers to enrol in the programme to do their teaching practice at the DSK. We are registered as an official partner of UCT and Stellenbosch University and are still in negotiation with the University of the Western Cape. We are proud to say that in the first year of the programme’s existence, four junior teachers enrolled in our programme.
We equip our future teachers with skills and methods, as well as offer practical experience opportunities which they need to become competent teachers. They also learn to manage teaching content, to motivate learners to strive for academic excellence as well as classroom management skills. A liaison teacher supports each student teacher. Regular meetings are conducted to offer support to our future teachers in their school life at the DSK.
