DSK Recognised as a “STEM-Friendly School”

The German International School Cape Town (DSK) was recognised as a “STEM-Friendly School” on 8 October 2026 in Potsdam, Germany. Principal Sabrina Gellermann and Debbie Rowe, Head of STEM, accepted the award on behalf of the school. The recognition acknowledges DSK’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

The award is based on 14 quality criteria, including the integration of STEM into the school curriculum, collaboration within the STEM team, encouraging girls to pursue science and technology, and partnerships with other schools and external organisations.

DSK impressed the evaluators with its existing programmes and ongoing commitment to STEM education. At the same time, the award provides valuable guidance for future development, highlighting the school’s strengths and identifying areas for further improvement.

STEM Education Begins with Asking the Right Questions
In her speech, State Secretary Isabelle Haß emphasised the importance of asking “Why?” Why do things work the way they do? Why do problems arise? And why do we need new solutions?

In a rapidly changing world, young people need more than subject knowledge. They also need curiosity, critical thinking skills and a sense of responsibility. STEM education helps students understand connections, ask meaningful questions and develop practical, sustainable solutions.

Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Another key focus of the event was the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The question is no longer simply whether AI should be used in schools, but how it can be used effectively and responsibly – and what skills students will need in the future.

AI can generate texts, analyse information and assist in solving complex problems. This is also changing how we view academic achievement. Increasingly, what matters is not just the ability to describe a problem, but the ability to understand and solve it – potentially with the appropriate support of AI.

Only those who understand how technology works can properly assess its potential, limitations and risks, and use it responsibly.

DSK therefore aims to equip its students with the skills to actively and critically shape the digital future. This also involves encouraging teachers to explore new technologies and develop meaningful ways to integrate them into teaching and learning.

A Shared Responsibility for the Entire School Community
As the German International School Cape Town, DSK combines German educational standards with an international learning environment. The school prepares its students for a future in which many of the challenges and demands are not yet fully known. Skills such as creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking and personal responsibility are becoming increasingly important.

The award confirms that DSK is making excellent progress in developing its STEM education. Our sincere thanks go to all our colleagues whose ideas, dedication and enthusiasm help bring STEM education to life at our school.

This recognition is both an achievement and a responsibility: to keep thinking ahead, experimenting, questioning and taking responsibility together.

After all, the future is shaped by those who have the courage to ask the right questions – and work together to find the answers.
